Abstract:
We investigate the global energy conversion at reconnection fronts propagating in the magnetotail on either side of the reconnection site. We use the methods developed in Angelopoulos et al., 2013 to ascertain the dimensions of flux transport in order to compare with expectation from global energy release. We also compare kinetic energy, enthalpy and Poynting flux to the expected energy conversion related to local flux transport and estimate the relative contribution of kinetic processes. We relate the findings to the balance of forces at the reconnection fronts.
