Abstract:
We present THEMIS observations of foreshock processes from October 2007 to December 2009. We analyse plasma moments, ion velocity distribution functions and magnetic field fluctuations to study the characteristics of ultra low frequency (ULF) waves generated by the backstreaming ions. Analysis of the spectra reveal that large amplitude sinusoidal waves with periods typically in the range 0.02 - 0.01 Hz. We explore possible means of convecting these ULF waves in to the magnetosheath and their effect on magnetosphere processes.
