Abstract:
Fundamental laboratory studies can provide a framework in which to better understand the atmospheric chemistry and global impacts of mineral dust aerosol. In this talk, several examples will be shown and include:

(i) heterogeneous chemistry of components of mineral dust aerosol – some recent advances;

(ii) impact of Fe-mineral dust aerosol chemistry on ocean biogeochemistry and human health; and

(iii) optical properties of mineral dust aerosol.

I will also show how these fundamental laboratory studies can be incorporated into atmospheric chemistry models and used to interpret field measurements.
