Abstract:
One would expect that losses from adverse natural events would go down as countries become richer. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Despite decades of progress, disaster losses are increasing all around the world and particularly in fast growing developing countries. The author, Head of the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), will explore the cause and consequences of this increase, as well as the policy implications for developing countries. He will also explore the role science can play to support policy and action at global and local level.
