Abstract:
Over the past decade the MODIS active fire and burned area products have achieved widespread scientific- and applications-use in a broad range of studies and programs. Here we describe refinements implemented in the forthcoming Collection 6 MODIS active fire and direct-broadcast burned area products, with an emphasis on operational applications, including the results of our recent validation activities. We additionally discuss the status of ongoing efforts to port these and other refinements to the next generation of fire monitoring sensors, in particular the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).
