Abstract:
This paper summarizes what a global circulation model has to get right in order to simulate the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Through a process of elimination, the ability of models to moisten the lower troposphere during periods of heavy rain is identified as a key issue. The results shed light on the nature of the MJO, and also have implications for parameterization.
