Abstract:
Among the many remaining scientific challenges for the Fourth National Climate Assessment some are noteworthy both because of their importance and the fact that they are within range of important new insights. Highlighted, are issues that fall within the five research goals and cross-cutting capabilities that have been identified in the 3rd National Climate Assessment. Examples of research priorities are examined within each of these goals and cross-cutting capabilities, where progress can be made in time for the 4th National Assessment. These research priorities include observing and data system infrastructure, understanding of the climate system and its socio-economic impacts, improved capacity to understand risks, and decision support and engagement of the private sector and investment communities.
