A11F:
Dynamical Downscaling: Methodology and Assessment Posters

Session ID#: 8419

Session Description:
Dynamical downscaling - the use of regional models to produce high-resolution weather and climate impacts from coarse resolution global climate model (GCM) simulations - has become commonplace on today’s high-end computing systems.  Still, there remains great uncertainty surrounding the design of downscaling approaches and the value added of the high-resolution solutions.  Fundamental questions exist as to whether regional climate models should simply be forced by the coarse resolution GCMs along outer domain boundaries or whether a numerical nudging within the domain is required.  Additionally, global downscaling has evolved as an alternative, using high-resolution cloud-permitting global models to simulate slices in time starting from a coarse resolution GCM simulation.  Similar to regional downscaling experiments, the question of if and how to relax to the coarse resolution simulation remains. This session invites studies of the issues surrounding the design, validation and appropriate use of dynamical downscaling methodologies for regional or global simulations.
