ED22B:
Using Our Own Scientific Research in Teaching Students in Higher Education: Innovations, Opportunities, and Challenges I

Session ID#: 8856

Session Description:
Academics, research scientists and research students are increasingly expected to disseminate their research to the public.  Apart from leading outreach programs, teaching university and college students based on one’s scientific investigations is also an effective way to further the impact of research through education.  It allows students to connect with their instructors in the learning process, thereby enhancing their understanding of research methodologies and discoveries.  However, linking one’s research with course contents and other scientific discoveries often presents pedagogical challenges.  In this session, we invite contributions from academics, research scientists and graduate students to discuss innovations and explore issues in linking their disciplinary, interdisciplinary or collaborative research to teaching in higher education.  We welcome contributions based on teachers’ own field-based, computational, experimental or theoretical research.  Innovative teaching methods used in lectures, seminars, online teaching, project supervision, as well as course and assessment design are particularly relevant to this session.
