Session Description:
Volcanism plays an important role in global volatile cycling whereby volcanoes are the filters through which volatiles are exchanged between planetary interiors and atmospheres. The abundance and composition of magmatic volatiles strongly control a myriad of geologic processes including storage and transport of volatiles in the deep earth, generation of primitive melts, degassing-induced crystallization in magma plumbing systems, atmospheric and ocean chemistry, and climate forcing. On the scale of individual volcanic systems and lava flows, volatiles affect a number of physical and chemical properties (phase equilibria, liquidi, viscosity) and are the driving force behind volcanic eruptions.

 

Studies of volatiles in volcanic processes are crucial to understanding how magmas form, evolve, and erupt and have wide-reaching implications from material science to volcanic hazards. We invite submissions that investigate these topics using experimental, analytical, modeling, and field-based perspectives applicable to Earth and other planetary bodies. Studies utilizing multidisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome.
