Session Description:
Environmental crisis and concerns seem to be ever increasing; yet environmental science majors among undergraduates have not been keeping pace with the biological sciences (ref needed).  Drawing new science students into the major is a concern for many higher education institutions. Although the environmental sciences have an important laboratory component, it is often the field research experience or "field laboratory" that first draws students into the science.  We believe that local environments, be they relatively pristine or urban, can themselves act as laboratories, encouraging hypothesis driven science in an engaging manner.  In this session proposal we invite researchers and teachers who have found creative ways of using their local environments, particularly challenging environments such as urban settings, to draw students into quantitative environmental sciences at the undergraduate level.
