Session ID#: 13200
Session Description:
Transport and reaction in hydrological systems is controlled by physical and chemical heterogeneity, which drive dispersion, mixing and biogeochemical processes. This leads to anomalous behaviors, and the formation of mixing and reaction hotspots. These processes may in turn affect the flow through density and viscosity variations, and the medium through dissolution, precipitation, biofilm formation. The aim of this session is to discuss new experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches to quantify and upscale transport, reaction, as well as mixing phenomena, and link them with medium structure and flow heterogeneity at multiple scales. This includes characterization of medium and flow heterogeneity, conservative, reactive and bacterial transport, heat transfer, variable density and viscosity flows, biodiversity and biofilm growth, and stochastic modeling and non-Fickian transport approaches.
