Session Description:
The Paris accord signaled an international consensus to limit climate change to “well below” 2°C.  Critical to the success of the Paris agreement is the need for deep decarbonization, including the continued emergence of low carbon fuels, energy efficiency, and the potential for negative carbon emissions.  Of particular interest for negative emissions are land-based approaches, including afforestation, reforestation, and bioenergy coupled with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).  This session focuses on new advances in understanding and constraining the human perturbation of the carbon cycle associated with deep decarbonization.  Relevant topics include past, present, and future trends of carbon cycle sources and sink and projections of energy and negative emissions required to stabilize global temperatures. The symposium will also present some current research on these topics from scientists in the Global Carbon Project (globalcarbonproject.org).
