Session Description:
Many K-5 teachers face challenges that make implementation of NGSS in ESS difficult at the K-5 level. Despite these challenges, there are K-5 teachers and many informal science educators that provide NGSS-congruent experiences. Also, there are a lot of geoscience faculty that work with K-5 preservice teachers in their courses, offering programs that promote the three dimensions of learning central to NGSS (Cheek and Petcovic, 2016). Additionally, some professional development inservice providers use research-based strategies to impact K-5 ESS education (Doubler et. al., 2015). Furthermore, within the GER community, there is a growing body of research at the K-5 level that informs our understanding of student learning and that has implications for NGSS implementation (Ault, 1982; Blake, 2005; Libarkin and Schneps, 2012). We invite K-5 teachers, informal science educators, inservice & preservice program providers, and geoscience education researchers to share their K-5 resources, programs, and research in this session.
