Climate Literacy: Informal Education and Citizen Science, New Successes, and Strategies Beyond the Classroom II Posters

Session Description:
Surveys indicate Americans who have made a personal connection to climate impact are most likely to care about climate and seek climate literacy. Citizen science and place-based formal and informal education can provide learners with meaningful and relevant connections to climate and the environment. The increased science understanding afforded by direct, personal involvement with data collection and research, and learning about causes, consequences and opportunities for individual action in climate mitigation and adaptation can catalyze learning and action. Through such experiences, people learn with minds, hands and heart – a formula steeped in learning theory and practice. We invite presentations in citizen science and other place-based formal and informal climate education that highlight proven methodologies for raising climate science, adaptation and mitigation literacy. Activities under development or recently launched, collaborative efforts between existing projects and programs aimed at elevating climate literacy, and those leveraging the GLOBE program are particularly encouraged.
