Session Description:
Globally, metropolitan areas comprise 1-2% of the land surface and contain over 50% of the human population. This session will explore urbanization processes alongside related water resource issues including floods, droughts, pollution, infrastructure, hydro-ecology and environmental flows. The fastest urban growth is often observed in low-density metropolitan areas comprising mixed land-use. Such changes commonly precede decentralized development practices, with unintended disruption to ecosystem services. Providing robust predictions under climate change is challenging and requires holistic/interlinked modelling approaches. The necessity to meet these challenges can facilitate innovation; developing and bringing together, for example, remote sensing, citizen science, smart sensor technologies and adaptive modelling. Recent developments will be presented with considerations of how best to evaluate modelling approaches to ensure they are providing requisite contemporaneous management information. Collating global perspectives, we will increase multi-disciplinary awareness regarding future needs for science-based decision-making and ecosystem management in mixed land-use watersheds.
