Session Description:
During recent years, Arctic sea ice has experienced rapid and accelerating thinning and retreat, which is in contrast with the modest increases in ice extent observed in the Southern Ocean. The ramifications of rapid and large scale changes in sea ice are wide reaching and are already impacting Arctic residents, biogeochemical systems, resource extraction, shipping activities, and national security interests. Developing the understanding of sea ice processes needed accurately predict future sea ice change in both hemispheres is, therefore, of considerable interest. This session examines processes of the frozen ocean, including sea ice and its snow cover, along with the variety of interactions and feedbacks with the atmosphere and ocean that drive the sea ice system. We welcome remote sensing, field, laboratory, and modeling studies of the processes that affect the properties of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice.
