Session Description:
Abrupt climate changes have occurred throughout the Late Quaternary, in both glacial and interglacial states, and may offer important insights on future climate change. Yet there is debate about their cause, the mechanisms involved, and their wider consequences. New high resolution paleoclimate records are revealing increasing complexity both within and between past abrupt climate events. Meanwhile, recent modelling studies have explored potential drivers other than freshwater, such as volcanic eruptions and ice sheet topography. This session invites contributions that address questions such as: What does it take to cause an abrupt climate event in a glacial or interglacial state? What differentiates Heinrich from non-Heinrich stadials? What caused the abrupt jumps in atmospheric CO2 and CH4 during stadials? What were the impacts of abrupt climate events on ocean and terrestrial carbon storage? We welcome proposals from all fields of the paleoclimate data and modelling community, including terrestrial, marine, and ice settings.
