Session Description:
Unconventional oil and gas reservoirs have received a great amount of attention. A better understanding of the physics of fluids in these reservoir rocks is critical for improving the efficiency of these energy systems while reducing environmental impact. Due to the complexity of nano- and micro-scale structures of unconventional rocks and the stronger interactions of fluids with the confining walls, conventional approaches are typically not applicable to fluid flow in tight and low-permeability porous reservoir rocks. Therefore, accurate characterization of rocks with nano to micro-scale pores is challenging and of grand importance. This session aims to address: a) new and modern methods and techniques for rock characterization and reconstruction, b) understanding mechanisms, such as slip flow, Knudsen diffusion, involved in flow and transport through tight and ultra-tight porous media including nano- to micro-scale pores, and c) recent theoretical and numerical models to upscale fluid flow and production in unconventional rocks.
