Radar-Driven Advances in Understanding and Modeling Clouds and Precipitation II Posters

Session Description:
Cloud and precipitation processes have been the main source of uncertainties in numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate change projections for decades. Polarimetric weather radars provide new pathways towards a better understanding of microphysical processes and high impact weather systems, and thus enable new approaches for process-oriented evaluation and improvement of NWP/climate models, and data assimilation techniques. Cloud radars operating at higher frequencies provide deeper insights in microphysical processes of ice clouds and multi-frequency signatures provide complementary information on ice habits, particle size distributions, and particle densities. Doppler spectra obtained from vertically pointing radars are also demonstrating great potential to elucidate microphysical and dynamical processes in clouds. Additional benefits arise from multi-sensor, e.g. radar, lidar, radiometer and satellite approaches.
This session welcomes contributions aiming at new ideas towards a more complete exploitation of our state-of-the-art radars, and techniques for advancing their fusion with other sensors and with atmospheric modeling.
