Teaching Systems Thinking: Integrating Earth and Global Change Science into Formal and Informal Education I Posters

Session Description:
An important challenge for educators in the 21st Century is to enhance public understanding of the inter-connectedness of Earth system processes, and the causes and consequences of global change to enable informed societal action. However, the foundational Earth systems knowledge necessary to comprehend the various factors and feedbacks that drive global change often falls outside traditional core science curricula, or Earth science is taught as a separate subject. In response to the need for integrated instruction, the Next Generation Science Standards include Earth and Space Science K-12 learning progressions that support the development of systems thinking. Currently, there are no standard methods or templates to support teachers, school districts, or supplemental providers with the implementation of these and other Earth system standards. We invite educators and scientists to share their methods for integrating Earth systems into instruction, and mechanisms for enhancing public understanding of global change processes.
