Session Description:
Signals of microbial life have expanded beyond physical fossil evidence to include molecular, elemental, and isotopic signatures. There has been an explosion in the application of stable isotope proxies used to investigate the rock record. In this exciting geochemical ‘gold-rush’ it is critical that solid connections to modern microbial, physical and (geo)chemically ground-truthed constraints be established, particularly with regard to the production and preservation of bio-isotopic signatures.We invite contributions from any period of Earth history, including modern natural and experimental analogues, using new or established methods for detecting microbial biosignals. Our goal is to provide a platform for studies that seek to elucidate mechanisms of biosignal formation, those that illuminate the preservation potential and fidelity of such proxies. Such studies move us toward a mechanistically grounded understanding of the co-evolution of life and its expression in the geological record.
