H51P:
Coupled Processes in Fractured Media Across Scales: Experimental and Modeling Advances Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 43899

Session Description:
Strong coupling between processes (hydro-mechanical-chemical-biological-thermo) occur in fractured geological formations across a wide range of time and length scales. Understanding the interplay of these processes is critical for numerous subsurface applications including petroleum and geothermal reservoir management, environmental remediation, carbon sequestration, and long-term radioactive waste isolation in underground repositories. This session focuses on recent progress in experimental, numerical and theoretical investigations of coupled processes in fractured media at various scales (from single fracture to fracture network scale). We encourage submissions related to (1) experiments and field observations of processes in fractured media, e.g., non-Fickian transport; colloid and bacteria transport; mixing and reaction; fluid/mineral interactions; biofilm formation; and coupled flow and geomechanics, and (2) new theoretical and numerical modeling approaches that provide mechanistic understanding and predictive capability of physical processes in fractured media across scales, e.g., direct simulation at the single fracture scale, discrete fracture network modeling, multi-scale modeling, and upscaling.
