Mechanisms, Monitoring, Modeling, and Environmental Impacts of Land Subsidence due to Fluid Extraction Posters

Session Description:
Land subsidence due to fluid withdrawal is an ongoing problem in many localities worldwide, particularly coastal cities susceptible to sea level rise. Environmental impacts associated with subsidence include differential compaction and earth fissures that can threaten infrastructures, roadways, pipelines and aqueducts. Although the basic mechanisms leading to land subsidence are well known, the genesis of earth fissures and the role of faults in subsidence prone regions is an area of ongoing investigation because they may be associated with both vertical and horizontal strains. As monitoring techniques become more advanced, and poromechanical models become more powerful and sophisticated, our ability to observe subsidence at greater temporal and spatial resolutions and at smaller magnitudes is enhanced. These advances allow us to investigate more complex mechanisms and structural and stratigraphic geologic controls influencing the observed subsidence patterns that will ultimately help us to mitigate the adverse affects of subsidence.
