OS23D:
Gas Hydrate–Bearing Sediments: Recent Advances in Characterization, Experiments, and Modeling Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 45398
Session Description:
Natural gas hydrates are widely distributed in permafrost and marine sediments at high pressures and low temperatures. Gas hydrates are a potential energy resource, and may play a role in Earth’s climate and natural hazards. Through recent technical advances, hydrate-bearing sediments can be sampled while better maintaining in situ hydrate and sediment properties; yet many geophysical, geochemical, hydrological, geomechanical and thermal properties remain insufficiently understood. Recent advances in experimental and numerical techniques investigating both natural and synthetic samples have broadened our vision and improved our understanding of the thermal, hydrologic, mechanical, chemical and microbiological behaviors of gas hydrate-bearing sediments. For this session, we encourage contributions from field sampling, in situ tests, laboratory and numerical studies providing new perspectives on (1) gas hydrate formation and dissociation in sediments, (2) the accompanied evolution of the physical properties of the sediments, and (3) the role of sediment-hosted gas hydrate in biogeochemical cycles.
