B51I:
Understanding the Role of Plant Hydraulics Across Scales I Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 45466

Session Description:
Vegetation modulates land to atmosphere fluxes of carbon and water through the plant water transport system. However, substantial spatial and temporal variation exists in plant hydraulic coupling due to variation in hydraulic strategies – different traits governing the movement of water through the plant. These traits influence both short-term fluxes and long-term carbon drawdown through interaction with mortality, competition, and other biotic factors. Plant hydraulics therefore has enormous potential applications in understanding ecosystem behavior. However, most observations and studies of plant hydraulics remain limited to the stand-scale. New remote sensing observations of canopy water content and recent efforts to employ plant hydraulic models at larger scales have increased the range of possible studies. In this session, we invite submissions related to observing, modeling, and characterizing plant hydraulic behavior, with a particular interest in landscape or greater scales.
