Droughts and Water Challenges in Changing Environments Posters

Session Description:
Drought is a complex natural hazard with its adverse multifaceted impacts cascading to physical and socio-economic systems. In cases of extended drought periods and/or large areal coverage, the associated consequences could be extensive and costly (e.g. 2012 U.S. drought costed about $33.0 billion). In the context of increasing water resources pressures from growing water demands and climate change, spatial and temporal analysis of past drought events along with the learned management lessons are critical for any future attempt to mitigate drought impacts and adapt to a changing environment. In this session, our current understanding of drought phenomena and forecasting are explored, including studies about drought characteristics, model predictions, climate projections and future droughts, as well as, indicators and impacts assessments, aiming to bring together scientists from different scientific disciplines. This session also welcomes studies that explore the effects of multi-hazard events (droughts-floods) and assessments of systems’ vulnerability to such successions.
