Session Description:
Approximately one-quarter of anthropogenic carbon is taken up each year by the ocean. Do recent advances in the complexity and resolution of ocean models result in reduced uncertainty surrounding the magnitude and long-term fate of this important carbon sink? New physical and biogeochemical processes are being incorporated into ocean models with a goal of improving our understanding of air-sea interactions, the export of organic matter to the deep sea, and interactions between the marine and terrestrial carbon reservoirs. To improve the representation of biogeochemical-climate feedbacks and the reliability of ocean model projections, high-quality observational data need to be employed to benchmark model results, assess their ability to represent mean states and variability across a range of timescales, and constrain future projections. In this session, we encourage abstract submissions describing research addressing model process developments, evaluation metrics and global and regional observational studies tailored to identify and reduce ocean model uncertainties.
