Advances in Adaptation Methods for Extreme Precipitation and Flooding II Posters

Session Description:
Extreme precipitation events continue to increase in occurrence and severity in the United States and globally. In 2017 Hurricane Harvey dropped unprecedented amounts of rainfall in the Houston area, in some locations approaching 50 inches or more over a three day period. Increases in these kinds of events are expected to continue in the future as the climate warms. Adaptation of infrastructure to these kinds of extreme precipitation events requires the use of intensity-duration-frequency curves (IDF) modified for expected increases in extreme precipitation. This session will explore methods to produce next-generation IDF curves that account for expected increases in extreme precipitation. This includes the use of information from climate model simulations, methods for incorporating snow into IDF values, use of hydrologic models to estimate runoff and flood risk with extreme precipitation.
