Advancing Toward a National Soil Moisture Network Posters

Session Description:
There are several methods for estimating soil moisture on a large scale (>100 km).  In situ networks have been in operation for several decades, collecting real time data.  Several remote sensing platforms make regular global maps of the near surface soil moisture conditions, some with remarkable accuracy, but at a relatively low spatial resolution.  Hydrologic models provide soil moisture simulations that can complement in situ and remote sensing data, often with higher spatio-temporal resolution.  The vision of the National Soil Moisture Network is to leverage these three methodologies to produce a high resolution (~1 km) soil moisture product for the continental U.S.  Current research is sought on in situ, remote sensing, or modeling of soil moisture, which can inform the development of the proposed National Soil Moisture Network product or algorithms.
