Terrestrial and Aquatic Methane Sinks: New Discoveries and Revisions, from Molecular to Global Perspectives I eLightning

Session Description:
Methane oxidation in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems plays a significant role in balancing out methane generation, and in mitigating the methane concentration in the atmosphere. High-affinity methanotrophy and anaerobic methane oxidation have recently been found to occur in more diverse ecosystems than previously recognized. These methane sinks however might have been overlooked in global methane models, and thus their global impacts being underestimated. This session aims to bring together research that addresses knowledge gaps in less-understood methane oxidation processes such as high-affinity methanotrophy and anaerobic methane oxidation, and their drivers. Efforts that incorporate knowledge from various disciplines and scales from molecular into global methane models will enable a holistic view of the global methane budget. Therefore, we welcome innovative work that integrates data from, but not limited to, inventory assessments, field and laboratory experiments, omics analysis, ecosystem and earth system models, and remote sensing.
