Session Description:
In order to support a growing world population, there is a strong demand to increase agricultural production. At the same time, the environmental footprint of agricultural production needs to be reduced by a more sustainable use of the limited available resources while maintaining profitability. In order to achieve this, detailed high-resolution information on the shallow subsurface is indispensable. Geophysical measurements provide a unique opportunity to rapidly and inexpensively map spatially continuous variations in soil properties across agricultural fields, and also allow monitoring of processes relevant for agricultural production (e.g. root water uptake, water and nutrient transport). This session seeks contributions that use geophysics to support all aspects of agricultural production, including the optimization of irrigation water and nutrient management, improved monitoring of the root zone, and the integration with agroecosystem models.
