Microbiome and Microbial Biogeochemistry in Terrestrial Saline/Hypersaline Environments Posters

Session Description:
Terrestrial saline/hypersline ecosystems (TSE, including saline marshes, saline/hypersaline lakes, and salt-affected soils) are a major component of the Earth’s terrestrial surface, and they contribute significantly to global element cycling. The TSE salinity ranges up to salt saturation, which can facilitate studies of constraints of salinity on microbes and microbial biogeochemistry. The TSE hosts abundant and diverse (phylogenetically and functionally) microbes, which plays important roles in regulating biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur elements. Different TSE with various salinity regimes support different functional types of microbes with different metabolic rates and pathways of elemental cycling. Although much is known about such systems, numerous knowledge gaps remain. With increasing terrestrial salinization, new insights on the responses of microbes and biogeochemical cycles to changing salt regimes is essential for developing management and adaptation strategies. Therefore, we solicit abstracts on the responses of microbes and microbial biogeochemistry to salinity in terrestrial systems.
