Advances in Incorporating Geomorphology and Flooding: Feedbacks and Impacts on Flood Risk Posters

Session Description:
Geomorphic processes, and changes to landscapes, affect flood risk by altering the capacity of channels or the flow paths of water and sediment. At the same time, flood events can have a disproportionate impact on a river’s morphology, with higher magnitude flows able to erode and transport more material than ordinary flows. Despite these obvious links and feedbacks, geomorphology is often considered unimportant in the assessment of flood risk, and is often dismissed as a lower-order sensitivity in flood forecasting models.
This session will showcase the latest field studies, numerical simulations, and physical experiments which improve our knowledge about the links between flooding and geomorphology across multiple spatial and temporal scales, and particularly those which enhance our understanding of how these links and feedbacks impact on the assessment of flood risk, both now and in the changing climate of the future.
