Session Description:
Plastic pollution in river systems is a widely recognized global problem with severe environmental risks. Besides the direct negative effects on river ecosystems, plastic pollution in rivers is also considered a dominant source of plastic input into the oceans.

In this session we invite contributions that focus on (but are not limited to):

  • Quantification of plastic in river systems;
  • Composition of riverine plastic;
  • Spatiotemporal variation of riverine plastic;
  • Relations between plastic pollution and e.g. population density, human behavior and waste management;
  • Relation between plastic, hydrology and hydraulics
  • Measuring and monitoring techniques for riverine plastic;
  • Modeling approaches for local and/or global river output estimations;
  • ...

This session will scheduled as AGU Short Talks, with 5-8 minutes for each presentation, followed by a plenary discussion on the current state and future challenges in riverine plastic research.
