Using Virtual and Physical Models to Develop Spatial Skills in the Lab, Field, and Classroom Posters

Session Description:
Geoscientists deal with a range of spatial problems and supporting learning to solve spatial problems is critical for maintaining a strong workforce. The relative ease and availability of new technologies, such as 3D printers and virtual reality, may lead to increased use in the classroom. However, research into the efficacy of these materials, and specifically how to deploy them to help students with 3D and spatiotemporal reasoning is needed to help faculty implement them in the classroom. Evidence informed practices can help guide the use of models as part of active learning pedagogy. This session invites presentations on research into innovative interventions to assist student learning, including Augmented Reality Sandboxes, 3D printing, physical models, clickers, computer models, animations, etc. Talks that include student data that inform at which stage in the curriculum and /or best practices for how new technologies can be used to support spatial learning are encouraged.
