OS31G:
Global Developments in Seafloor Mapping: Gaining a Greater Insight into Earth Systems III Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 49440

Session Description:
Necessity to map the Earth's ocean floor has never been so urgent as a result of unprecedented anthropogenic pressures. Human activity and growth in the global marine economy necessitate a deepening of our marine knowledge. High-resolution seafloor mapping of oceans and coastlines alike provide baseline information, that in turn support scientific research, evidence-based policy decisions, and sustainable resource management.

To facilitate the definitive production of a World Ocean floor map, a new inclusive global initiative was established. The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project encourages developments in technology, data sharing, crowd-sourcing, and the acquisition of ancillary acoustic data. Continued seafloor mapping by national and regional programs, hydrographic offices, scientific researchers and commercial agencies illustrate encouraging progress.

This session aims to bring the academic, commercial and government seafloor mapping communities together. We encourage papers on mapping programs, collaborative initiatives, geological discoveries, technological and scientific advances, acquisition standards and processing methodologies.
