Session Description:
Two of Earth’s most astonishing features- it’s unique, time-varying magnetic field as well as it’s surficial activity due to plate tectonics- are driven by convective mass transport processes in the Earth’s interior, the details of which remain poorly understood to date. Notably, the description of the multi-scale dynamics involved in the thermal evolution of the dynamo-generating region of the outer core calls for the comparison of theoretical approaches, numerical modeling, experiments, and observations. Similarly, the complex structure of the inner core, observed at various spatial scales and resulting from crystallization, melting and deformation, remains perplexing in connection to the historical evolution of both regions of the core. As such, we solicit contributions from multi-disciplines including, but not limited to: seismology, mineral physics, geodynamics, and geomagnetism, in a common effort to advance the understanding of the Earth's core.
