Geophysical Characterization of Fluid Flow in Subsurface Sediments Posters

Session Description:
Near-vertical acoustic anomalies (e.g. chimneys and pipes) are interpreted as the seismic expression of focused fluid flow, hydraulically connecting gas-prone deeper layers with the shallower overburden. Aqueous fluids and gases are broadly observed in sedimentary basins, active and passive margins, however, the genesis, evolution, and physical properties of fluid pathways in shallow sediments remain poorly understood. Geophysical characterization of subsurface fluid pathways is an important field of research for environmental and climate studies, hydrocarbon production, geothermal energy, and assessment of the integrity of sub-seafloor Carbon Capture and Storage sites. This session will focus on the utilization of both active and passive source experiments (e.g. seismology, seismic or electromagnetic techniques) to characterize fluid flow in sediments. We encourage submissions from geophysical studies about the development and the physical properties of fluid pathways and fracture networks associated with fluid flow, as well as studies of natural seismicity related to fluid flow.
