Hydrometeorological Simulation and Forecasting of Atmospheric Rivers and Their Impacts: Processes, Simulations, and Observations Posters

Session Description:
Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are a major driver of floods, water resources and hydroclimate variability in many regions of the world including western North America. Reliable forecasting of precipitation, snowfall, streamflow, suspended sediments, water quality and other impacts of ARs requires the integration of observations with simulations of the atmosphere, ocean and land systems. This session highlights recent developments in forecasting and observing the impacts of ARs. Specific focus areas include: coupled atmospheric-hydrologic modeling for streamflow prediction during ARs; observed and simulated impacts of ARs on water resources; evaluations of forecast skill and the predictability of extreme precipitation and streamflow; near real-time data assimilation and parameter estimation techniques to improve forecasts; the influence of physical process description on AR forecast skill in the land-ocean-atmosphere system; and the use of forecasts in water resources and environmental management.
