Legacy Effects of Land Use on Water Quality, Watershed Processes, and Ecosystem Function: Implications for Science and Policy Posters

Session Description:
Human activity over decades of agriculture, resource extraction, and urbanization has led to an accumulation of sediments, nutrients, and contaminants within the landscape.  These legacies can influence water quality, watershed processes, and ecosystem functions over decades and centuries, with legacy-associated lag times presenting unique challenges for contemporary and future watershed management and water quality policies. In this session, we address both the science and policy issues related to legacy effects on water quality, watershed processes, and ecosystem functions. Studies using experimental approaches, data synthesis, and modeling are welcome. Examples of relevant topics may include sediment legacies in landscapes, accumulation of non-point source nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, contaminants in brownfields, accumulation of road salts and salinization of our waterways, long-term impacts of forest management and fires, legacy of mined lands, and long term trends in acid deposition and lake recovery.
