EP31E:
The Interplay of Cohesive Sediment Dynamics and Hydrodynamics in the Coastal Riverine Zone to the Outer Reaches of the Continental Shelf Posters

Session ID#: 49996
Session Description:
Cohesive sediment (or mud) dynamics in the coastal zone to the outer Continental Shelf are impacted by fluvial and ocean dynamics. For instance, cohesive sediment dynamics strongly influences hydrodynamics in rivers and coastal zones by altering fluid properties, damping wave spectra, reducing turbulence, directing seabed morphology, zoning chemical species, altering acoustic properties, and reducing optical clarity. Conversely, fluvial processes, tides, currents, internal waves, tsunamis etc., affect cohesive sediment dynamics, transport, and geomorphology through forced aggregation, turbulence induced flocculation, subaqueous deposition, subaerial deposition or land building, bed-form alteration, resuspension, and massive mud failure. In addition to physical processes, mud properties are strongly influenced by biota. This session welcomes presentations on recent laboratory, field, and numerical studies that address hydrodynamic processes that affect cohesive sediment dynamics, such as wave or current induced sediment transport, but which are currently decoupled from cohesive sediment dynamics, and on cohesive sediment dynamics that affect hydrodynamic processes.
