OS51D:
Improved Observational and Modeling Skills to Understand the Hurricane and Winter Storm Induced Surge and Meteotsunami Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 50075

Session Description:
Natural Hazards (e.g., storm surge, meteotsunami) have been reported to pose a great impact on the coasts. Recently, powerful winter storms ('Bomb Cyclone') along the U.S. East Coast and hurricanes over the Gulf of Mexico (e.g., Hurricane Harvey) generated high surges. Rapid changes in barometric pressure can generate meteotsunamis. It is important to improve the observational and modeling skills to observe and predict these natural hazards. For example, most meteotsunamis are too small to observe, but they can have devastating impacts on coastal communities. Therefore, a reliable observational and warning system needs be developed.

This session is gathering scientists by sharing the advanced observational and numerical model knowledge. Research topics include but are not limited to: 1) the impact of coastal hazards to the coastal systems; 2) evaluate physical and ecological dynamics with respect to climate change; 3) storm surge and meteotsunami modeling; and 4) storm surge and meteotsunami observations.
