The Role of Data in Understanding and Attributing Changes in Hydrologic Extremes Posters

Session Description:
Historical hydrologic trends and physically based model projections are increasingly completed at large scales. While historical observations may not be a reliable indicator of future hydrologic conditions, projections for a changing climate show substantial uncertainty, particularly for floods and droughts. Both are critical to better understand and manage for expected changes in water resources. Historical streamflow changes provide important insight into long-term future changes, and also into long-term variability linked to atmosphere-ocean oscillations; these are important for effective adaptive responses, for empirically projecting changes that are poorly described in GCMs, and for defining needed improvements in modeled hydrologic projections. Further, recent regional analyses are producing an emerging view of the relative contributions of land-use and climate variability toward hydrologic change. We solicit presentations on analyses of historical streamflows, particularly related to attribution of changes in extreme flows from multiple stations, or on advancing methods for attributing changes.
