The Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON): Integrating in Situ and Remotely Sensed Observations to Advance Biodiversity Monitoring, Research, and Applications Posters

Session ID#: 50437
Session Description:
Characterizing biodiversity patterns and understanding how and why these patterns change over time requires a multi-level approach for monitoring different facets of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity from genes to ecosystems. Moreover, this endeavour depends upon both remotely sensed and in situ observations, each contributing complementary information. The Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), a flagship of the global GEO partnership, seeks to improve the acquisition and coordination of all types of observations, as well as the delivery of derived products and services to decision makers and the scientific community. At this ten-year anniversary of GEO BON, we highlight the variety of ways that in situ and remotely sensed observations can be used together to advance biodiversity research and conservation, with a particular focus on GEO BON activities, including the development of Essential Biodiversity Variables, regional and national BONS, and thematic networks such as the Marine BON.
