Session Description:
The analysis of energy systems has historically used proprietary data and models. This reduces transparency and replicability and therefore credibility of results. It also complicates coupling different models together for larger system analysis purposes.

Open data can play an important role in overcoming these problems. It has the potential to decrease duplication of efforts and improve scientific reliability of results, which can lead to better policy decisions. However, open data requires re-thinking how datasets are validated and kept current, how data from multiple sources can be integrated, and how standard data formats can be developed and implemented.

This panel session aims to highlight ongoing efforts to increase transparency in energy modelling, including the increased use of satellite data, open models and access to open energy data. It will also provide a forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to open data sources in energy.
