Preferential Flows in Fractured Porous Media, Soils, and Rock–Soil Interfaces II Posters

Session Description:
Preferential flows in subsurface media are widely acknowledged to control infiltration and recharge, aquifer vulnerability as well as connectivity of surface and subsurface ecosystems. While they are also associated with saturated flow dynamics, e.g. in the context of anomalous transport, they commonly occur under unsaturated conditions in soils and fractured porous media. To study the onset and dynamics of preferential flow, and hence the partitioning into several sub-domains (macropores, fractures) with strong contrasts in hydraulic conductivity, elaborate analytical, numerical and experimental methods are required across scales. Specifically, in the case of fractured (karstified) porous media, research is often complicated by the much larger associated scales of fractures, limited accessibility, and, consequently, the applicability of soil-related methods for the quantification of flow dynamics is questionable. In this session we welcome contributions from the soil science and the hydrogeological community to share and integrate findings and promote joint research.
