Cosmic Ray Muon Tomography: An Emerging Technique for Imaging and Monitoring Large Volumes Posters

Session Description:
Cosmic-ray muon tomography or muography is an imaging technique that takes advantage of the naturally occurring flux of elementary particles called muons, originating from nuclear interactions in the upper atmosphere. Muons are capable of penetrating a few hundred meters of material before being absorbed, which allows estimating the density of large-scale bodies by measuring their absorption rate, similarly to X-ray radiography. This passive method offers new opportunities for studying massive bodies for several months, with applications that include the characterization and monitoring of volcanoes or the investigation for ore bodies or underground cavities using specialized detectors. Strong developments are ongoing both in instrumentation (borehole detector) and in data analysis (inversion), bringing this method at the forefront of innovative geophysical techniques. This session will help drawing the particle physics and geophysics communities closer together to expand the range of applications.
