Disturbance Hydrology: Exploring Both Immediate and Long-Term Impacts of Abrupt Changes on Hydrological Processes and Earth Systems eLightning

Session Description:
Anthropogenic and natural disturbances stimulate hydrological systems often triggering complex phenomena due to non-linear, non-additive interaction, process cascades, and feedbacks between hydrologic, geomorphic, biogeochemical, and ecologic systems. Disturbances open a window to better understand the hydrologic cycle as a whole. Disturbance hydrology examines how wildfires, resource extraction, deforestation, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, among other abrupt changes impact hydrological fluxes, their pathways, and processes. These impacts may be limited in space and time, but can induce both short-lived and long-term changes in water partitioning, residence time distributions, and fluxes of solutes and sediments over broad scales. Thus, improved process knowledge and the quantification of individual and overlapping disturbances are fundamental for developing robust predictions and land management practices. We welcome submissions that investigate how disturbances modify hydrological functioning, and in particular studies that include multiple disturbances.
