Toward Unifying Principles for Wetland Restoration in Light of Chemical and Microbial Ecology Posters

Session Description:
The socio-economic value of wetland functions is high, providing ~40% of global renewable ecosystem services, although wetlands occupy ~ 9% of the Earth’s terrestrial surface. A central goal of wetland restoration ecology is to predict the outcomes of specific restoration actions. For various ecosystem functional attributes, we need predictability in the rates of change and understanding of the consequences of restoration. Wetland restoration strategies manipulate microbial activity and biogeochemistry by decelerating decomposition rates attributed to depleted levels of molecular oxygen. Restoration aimed to enhance carbon sequestration, however, frequently fail to establish the desired outcome. Microbial communities are central to biogeochemical function, and relating microbial community dynamics to biochemical and physical variables can generate insights into the ecological drivers of restoration success.

We invite studies that evaluate wetland function restoration through microbial and biogeochemical approaches, with emphasis on carbon stabilization mechanisms, greenhouse gas production, taxonomic versus functional ecology.
